Interesting question. How should one manage one’s time? I learned from a heart surgeon who visited my class one day that a better question is how should one manage one’s energy? We all get 168 hours a week with which and the energy we have and the creativity we have we build the structure that becomes our lives. Every week another building block is laid on our life’s edifice.
People who have a little OCD (like me) or who have a little ADD will likely make different decisions. As I’ve aged, well all along actually, I wanted to get the most out of my time. Who was it once noted he’d rather beg for lost hours on the street corner than a dollar or two? (I forgot) I agree, do-rest-learn-do-rest-learn is an important cycle—no one can work/produce ALL the time. I was a bit of a workaholic — and it provided me and my family a comfortable lifestyle even into retirement. (Remember the continuous LEARNING part of the cycle is key lest one simply do-rest and repeat ad nauseum.)
So, after school/work, what to do? A short nap works. Going to taekwondo class for me was even more relaxing than napping — and physically and mentally and emotionally rewarding and cleansing. (Tennis, basketball, etc. also work) Especially after school—take a break by doing something different and then go back to studying and ingesting the day’s insights. I got a doctorate and that worked all the way through.
So, it’s up to you and your brain chemistry and goals. What’s your purpose in life? How will you spend your time? If you don’t have a purpose yet, the choice of what to do with your time will plague you. Once you figure out what you want to spend your life doing, every hour will become precious. For me, my purpose became to help people find themselves. That grew out of my own history having three last names. Even today, writing answers on Quora for an hour a day revolves around that central purpose—I hope my answers will help people learn more about themselves and what they can do to fulfill their personal purposes in life.
One thing you might do in that hour after at home is first, figure out what you want to do with your life. Then, that hour won’t be enough!!
